November 2004

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

As I write this message it is Halloween weekend already. The year seems to be flying by. This month’s news begins with something from Society. APICS Society announced significant changes at the recent International Conference. After much study and research, it was decided to change the APICS name (tag line) and Logo. While the APICS name will remain, the logo itself will be dramatically changed from the straight block letters it is now. More significantly, we will no longer be “The Educational Society for Resource Management”, but will become “The Association for Operations Management”, a much more focused and defined definition of which we are. There is more to the change and reasons for it that will be communicated prior to the beginning of the actual roll-out in January 2005.

I want to thank Past President Kurt Petersen for his excellent presentation on Bemis’s process improvement program called “Book-It”. The program has been in place since the mid 1990’s and has yielded numerous cost savings ideas that have resulted in the saving of Millions of Dollars. This month we have another very interesting speaker and topic, at our annual Student’s Night PDM being held on Thursday November 18th. Note: this is a change from our originally scheduled night of November 16th. The location will remain the same, Millersville House.  Our speaker will be Randy Meyer, currently the Mayor of Sheboygan Falls. He has overcome more challenges and adversity than most of us will see in our lifetimes. He attributes his success to vision and a positive attitude. He will address us on group dynamics, goal setting and communication.

I hope to see many of you at both the Kohler NAPM event and our Monthly PDM at Millersville House on the 18th of November.

November 18th for the Professional Development Meeting:

Speaker: Randy Meyer Mayor of Sheboygan Falls

Topic:      Group Dynamics, Goal Setting, and Communication in the Work Place

Short Biography:

Randy Meyer – Randy was born November 16, 1967 and was raised in Sheboygan Falls.  He lost his eye sight at age two from cancer of the retina.  However, this has not held him back from having a vision for his life and acting upon that vision.

Because of his blindness, Randy had to attend elementary school for the blind in Green Bay.  First through sixth grade he lived with a host family in Green Bay and only stayed with his own family in Sheboygan Falls on weekends, vacations, and the summertime.  This situation was what leads Randy with help of his family and teachers to set and accomplish his first major goal, to attend Sheboygan Falls High School and live with his family year round.

To accomplish this goal Randy had to attend the Wisconsin School for the Visually Handicapped in Janesville.  Here he successfully learned mobility skills with a white cane and was able to realize his dream of attending Sheboygan Falls High School and being able to spend more time with his family.

During high school Randy excelled in both the classroom and on the wrestling mat.  His major accomplishments in high school include: graduating on the honor role, qualifying for the state wrestling tournament twice and placing fifth his senior year, setting a new school pin record his senior year with 23 pins on the way to a 31 and 2 records.

Randy graduated from UW Whitewater.  His wrestling success in college continued in college, where he earned all America and academic all American honors and placed in the top eight in the nation.

Randy has been a financial planner since 1992 and currently owns an office in downtown Sheboygan Falls.  Randy believes that volunteering time and being active in the community is important.  Randy was recently elected Mayor of Sheboygan Falls.  Before that he served five years as an Alderman on the city council.  His community service also includes more than ten years as a member of the Jaycees and membership in Kiwanis and Chamber/Main Street.

Most importantly Randy believes in maintaining a positive attitude.  He believes in focusing on solutions not problems.  He views his blindness as a minor challenge, rather than a handicap.  His slogan during the Mayoral campaign was “it doesn’t take sight to run a community, it takes a vision”.
