MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

The 2007-year is blazing by. Thanksgiving has come and gone and Christmas is just around the corner with the New Year closing in. I certainly hope that all of you had a Happy Thanksgiving and were able to spend some quality time with family and friends.

Our program year continues to be very successful. Our chapter had a great showing at our November PDM and we were very pleased with the significant contribution of non-perishable donations. With your help we were able to provide 5 bags of much appreciated groceries to the Salvation Army.

We will not have a PDM in December (our standard schedule for the month), but we will be back in January. Our next PDM is planned for January 10th at Knox’s Silver Valley Supper Club, Manitowoc.  Please check our next newsletter for additional details on the location, topic and speaker.

If you are not already aware, in spring 2008, the APICS corporate office will move from Alexandria, Virginia to Chicago, Illinois. Although APICS is changing locations, it will be business as usual. Members and customers will continue to receive excellent customer service, free domestic shipping, streamlined ordering, and high-quality membership services, education, and certification programs.

Get ready to update your address book—more details are on the way.

As 2007 ends we look forward to the challenges and opportunities of 2008. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our members; the Board of Directors; and our CPIM Review Class Instructors for success of our chapter. It is with your support and energy that we are able to continually improve our offerings.  We look to you to share your feedback and suggestions on topics and speakers that are of interest to you.

In closing, I wish you all a very safe and Happy Holiday Season, and hope that the New Year brings you health and happiness.

James Prellwitz, CPIM

Highlights of Denver Convention from Stacy Backhaus

Where else can you go where the temperature is 80° on Saturday and 30° with an inch of snow by Sunday morning? Apparently it is Denver.

What a city! Beautiful mountains, fresh thin air, very nice helpful people.

My first International Conference was in Kansas City two years ago. I learned and brought ideas back with me. In Denver, they really kicked it up.

There were nine areas of concentration:

Operations Essentials

Inventory Optimization

Lean Operations

Executive Strategy

Auto Identification

Warehousing and Distribution

Professional Advancement

Demand Planning/Forecasting

Supply Chain Collaboration

Each of these areas of concentration held numerous and varied sessions on topics of interest within the subject. Sessions were informative and attendees were encouraged to be interactive with the speaker and audience to ask questions or share experiences.

Speakers for the sessions came from all over the globe, as did many attendees. It was interesting to hear how many different, yet similar, problems that we have to confront and solve no matter where we are living or working.

Featured speakers were outstanding! As a mentor, I was allowed to sit with my scholar in the reserved section right in front of the stage. Ken Blanchard talked of leading at a higher level where your organization becomes the company of choice by your customers, your employees, and your investors. Jack Bacon spoke of where we were and we are going in the future. He should know since he worked on the Space Station and helped invent artificial intelligence. Steve Uzzell spoke of the mind opening phenomenon of driving down an open road while he shared his award winning photographs with us. Open your mind on an open road, the imagination is released and problems dissolve quickly into solutions.

Alice Ward, V.P APICS Shoreline Chapter, attended the conference with me. We both choose to be a Mentor to a Scholar. Since there were more Scholars than Mentors, we each asked for another Scholar. Both of my Scholars were non-traditional students. One attended a Colorado university and the other, Robert, was attending university in Minnesota. Robert plans on taking his education and APICS knowledge back to Kenya to help his country improve in the world market place and teach others about APICS.

Please consider being a Mentor to a Scholar when you attend Conference. You sit with your Scholar in the best seats in the house for General Sessions. A little assistance with what sessions to attend is also part of helping these Scholars. Later in the day, share what you learned. It takes little time to help enhance their experience and knowledge while explaining to them the benefits of APICS and the resources that are available to them via the website or their networking experiences.

Lakeshore Technical College had six students from the Supply Chain Management Club attend the conference. The students were able to attend due to their fundraising efforts and a small donation from APICS Shoreline Chapter. They planned and arranged all details needed for attending while using skills learned in the classroom. Ask a student about their trip, and trials, when you attend the March PDM that the students plan and host.

Notes of interest are two different collaborations that APICS has made available to its members free of charge. Please check apics.org for more details.

APICS has teemed up with Aberdeen to provide benchmarking research for APICS members. See where your company places among others in your industry. Or check where your suppliers, or future suppliers, place.

The other one is collaboration with MIT. Open courseware is available to APICS members free of charge. It will not earn you a degree but will help you keep up with new ideas and includes over 18,000 available courses. I checked the site and it includes syllabus, handouts, readings, and sample tests. Please check apics.org for more details.

I was recently asked if there were other conferences occurring in other parts of the world. Indeed there is. One is planned for the near future in India for those in that section of the world. Again, please check apics.org for more details.

I met many APICS members that I first met at Kansas City. I still correspond with some of them. I also met many new people that I have been in contact with since the Conference. The dinners we spent together, be it indoor or outdoor, were full of catching up and sharing the day on what we learned.

Would I go again, definitely!

International Conference schedule: Note the earlier dates for 2008

2008 Kansas City – September 14-16

2009 – TBD

2010 – Nashville

On a closing note, some things to ponder:

In Alice in Wonderland, she comes to a fork in the road and doesn’t know which one to take in case it is wrong. Does it matter which way to go? Sometimes, sometimes not. The main thing is to choose. If it is wrong, back up, learn from it, and go on.

To quote Steve Uzzell: “Make the problem your passion. If something is worthy of your time, it is worthy of your passion.”

Missed out on going to conference this year?  CD’s are available for the 2007 conference proceedings, free for APICS members.  Contact customer service service@apics.org to request a free copy be sent to you. Please include your member number and allow 2 to 3 weeks for processing.
