Board of Directors 2007/2008
Fellow APICS members:
My family is glad to finally have me home for a couple of
weeks over Christmas and New Years before I hit the road again. As I sit here contemplating the Holidays I
think back at how fast the past year has gone by and how much we have
experienced. In 2007 we have seen skyrocketing fuel prices, plummeting real
estate values, poisoned food and lead painted toy recalls, an airline passenger
flying with TB, Alli diet pills and i-phones. We’ve seen pepper sprayed beauty pageant contestants,
Paris Hilton and Michael Vick in Jail, Don Imus off
the air and hundreds of other bizarre and off-the-wall events. It really makes
me wonder what 2008 may bring to us.
How about these things that 2008 could bring to us?
Hey! It could happen.
Play this little game.
Get some friends together and each write down three things that you
would expect to see in 2008 and three things you don’t expect to see in 2008
and next year at this time see how many came true. I’ll bet you will find that
more things happen that you didn’t expect than you expected.
In all seriousness, we are planning for and expect our
program for 2008 to be even better than the great year we had in 2007. We have some terrific PDM’s
planned with fascinating speakers and topics sure to peak your interest and
provide you with valuable insight and knowledge.
Our next PDM is planned for January 10th at Knox’s
Silver Valley Supper Club, Manitowoc. Please look through the newsletter for
additional details on the location, topic and speaker.
In Region news, the 13th Annual Student Case Competition.
February 15 and 16, 2008 in Downers Grove ILL. More information will be coming
soon...............
Also keep in mind the APICS International conference in Kansas
City, Missouri running September 14th thru the 16th in
2008. The keynote speaker is planned to
be John Replogle, the CEO of Burt’s Bees. It promises to be very exciting.
As we start 2008, I would like to again take this
opportunity to thank all of our members; the Board of Directors; and our CPIM
Review Class Instructors for the past success of our chapter. It is with your
support and energy that we are able to continually improve our offerings. We look to you to share your feedback and
suggestions on topics and speakers that are of interest to you.
In closing, I wish you all a very safe, healthy and
prosperous 2008.

Now a leg up: Graduating Dave Wargin ready to move forward with his life
By Doug Carroll
Sheboygan Press
staff

Few life stories could be
more compelling than that of Dave Wargin among the
225 winter graduates of Lakeshore Technical College. "I'm a non-traditional student,
obviously," Wargin said. "I've got
education under my belt now, at least some of it, and I've loved every minute.
LTC is a great place."
Wargin, 47, of Sheboygan Falls, wasn't in
such a great place almost three years ago when a degenerative hip injury forced
him to leave a job he loved. While working as a heating contractor, he
discovered that he no longer could walk stairs, which becomes a problem when
most furnaces are in basements.
Diagnosed with avascular necrosis in his right leg stemming from an injury
years earlier, he soon realized he'd never be able to go back to physical work.
His employer paid his health insurance until the end of 2005 and he sold his
house in mid-2006 on the brink of foreclosure.
Since then, Wargin, who is single, has lived in an apartment on no
income, putting off creditors, relying on food banks and using government loans
to put himself through LTC, where he began in January 2006. "I said to myself, 'I'm going back to
school,'" he recalled. "'There's a job I can do if I can get
retrained.'"
Wargin's immense challenges caught the
attention of LTC's Steve Redmer,
the instructor in his first class.
"We're here to make sure you succeed," Redmer
said reassuringly. "If you don't get it, we'll make sure you get it."
The encouragement was all
he needed. Next Saturday, Wargin will receive an
associate's degree in supply chain management, a field formerly known as
materials management. He received the program's Student of the Year award for
2006-07 and attended an international conference in October.
His children — Craig, 26,
and Michelle, 23 — will be on hand for his graduation. Craig, a graduate of the
University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in computer programming who recently took a
job in Illinois, helped nudge his father into the computer age. Michelle, a
junior at UW-Oshkosh, has had the experience of being in college at the same
time as her dad.
Wargin, who said he "used to be the
guy in the back of the room" in school, plans to start work on his
bachelor's degree if he can't find employment right away. After all that he has
been through, he reasons, he can handle either scenario. "It gets me teary," he said of how
far he has come. "I didn't do too bad for an old guy. I kept my grade
point above 3.0 the whole way.
"I'm a forward
thinker, and I'll be an asset wherever I go. I've had great networking
experiences, and if you can network, you can find a job. Whoever hires me will
get the best at what I do."
