MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

To our readers:

Well, 2008 is off and running.  I’m writing this message from my flat in Ecully, France on a cool January morning.  The weather is an unseasonable 50 degrees warmer than Manitowoc’s 3 above zero and it just lends more impact to the several thousand mile distance from home and family. Even worse is looking forward to today’s long agenda after staying up until 4 AM watching the Green Bay Packer debacle against the Giants in the NFC Championship.  Amazingly yes, the game was broadcast live on French National Channel 2; with French commentators of course.  Anyway back to the business for Shoreline APICS.

You will notice that my introduction now reads “to our readers” instead of the standard “Fellow APICS members”.  It was brought to my attention that some of you out there are not yet APICS members and I want to assure you that you are as welcome to read this publication as anyone.  Of course we would love to see your names show up in our new member roles and taking advantage of everything that APICS has to offer, but I bid you a literary welcome just the same.

In January, the Shoreline - APICS board of directors put on a great meeting at Knox’s Silver Valley Supper Club, in Manitowoc. We were pleased to have Greg Gauthier share his experience and knowledge on the topic of surviving and coping with the challenges of leadership.  Thanks go out to Ruth Zimmermann for locating another good speaker.

For February we will be at one of our less familiar locations, Nino’s Restaurant in Sheboygan.  Please check your newsletter for details regarding the date, speaker, topic and directions to the PDM.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for a couple more special days in February.

February 4th is the middle of winter. Days are getting longer.

Make note of February 15 and 16 for the Great Lakes District Student Case Competition in Oak Brook, Illinois.

And of course, remember your special Valentine on Thursday, February 14th.

PDM Speaker: Denny McCullough, CPIM

An engaging and popular speaker, Denny is a frequent presenter on a variety of business improvement topics. Prior to joining Schenck, he was president and owner of a consulting franchise, which operated internationally, assisting in business improvement strategy implementations such as Supply Chain, Lean, and Six Sigma. Denny has extensive experience including having served as vice president of a major worldwide education and consulting practice based in Chicago where he specialized in course design with an emphasis on adult learning methodologies. He has also held a number of key management positions for firms such as Hyster Company and Terex Corporation, where he was responsible for corporate materials management and operations, with a heavy emphasis on the development and implementation of business improvement strategies, including Class A ERP, lean manufacturing and team building.

Topic: The Kaizen is Over…Now What?

Team-Based Problem Solving - The Key to Continuous Improvement

Everyone knows about Kaizens or Rapid Improvement Events.  Usually 2 to 5 days long, these events are focused on implementing a specific Lean strategy such as 5S or Cell Design in a predetermined area of the factory or the office.  The results are often awe-inspiring reductions in waste and improvements in productivity.  Some firms have done so many of these events that they are beginning to be referred to as “Drive-By Kaizens.”  This means lots of short-term “flash” but no long-term “cash.”

What is the reason for the lack of staying power in the benefits of these events?  The answer is an inadequate focus on continuous improvement.  This presentation explains how Lean initiatives must also establish continuous improvement and long-term benefits by leveraging Team-Based Problem Solving.  We will discuss how teams come together, the skills needed to identify and implement real problem solutions and the metrics required to drive continuous improvement as part of the business culture.

Location: Nino’s Restaurant, Sheboygan; From Manitowoc:  Hwy 43 S. Merge onto Hwy 23 E via exit 126 toward Sheboygan.  Turn LEFT onto N. 25th St (1mile). Turn left onto Kohler Memorial Dr (1 mile) End at Nino's Steak & Seafood
