To our readers:

President’s Message

Take heart my friends. Even though the cold and snowy weather outside does not reflect it and the height of the cold and flu season is upon us, spring is just a few weeks away.  I’d like to just take a moment to mention a few items before cabin fever sets in.

February gave us a real challenge with weather swings and many of our members out sick but we were still able to put together a very successful meeting at Nino’s in Sheboygan. 27 members, students and guests braved the elements to share in the experience with one of our regular speakers, Denny McCullough.

I also wish to mention, to those students interested in supply chain management, Shoreline Chapter is taking applications for program scholarships.  Open to day and evening students enrolled in the Supply Chain Management program and 2008 high school graduates planning to enroll in the Supply Chain classes at LTC.  A minimum of $1000 is to be divided among eligible entrants. Sorry, but May LTC graduates are not eligible.  Applications must be postmarked no later than March 28, 2008. No late applications will be accepted.  Please contact Linda Tryba Linda.Tryba@kohler.com if you wish to receive a scholarship application.

Congratulations to team members from our LTC Student Chapter, who made a strong impression at the Great Lakes District Student Case Competition.  For more information on this event follow the link - Student Case Competition

Our March 12th PDM is “Student Night” and will be held at Seven Lakes Golf Course and Restaurant near Cato, Wisconsin west of Manitowoc.  We are very fortunate to have a regular speaker be able to give us two consecutive months out of a very busy schedule.  Denny McCullough will once again be our guest speaker and will be presenting the unique topic of “Ten Important Lessons You Won’t Learn in School”.

PDM Speaker: Denny McCullough, CPIM

An engaging and popular speaker, Denny is a frequent presenter on a variety of business improvement topics. Prior to joining Schenck, he was president and owner of a consulting franchise, which operated internationally, assisting in business improvement strategy implementations such as Supply Chain, Lean, and Six Sigma. Denny has extensive experience including having served as vice president of a major worldwide education and consulting practice based in Chicago where he specialized in course design with an emphasis on adult learning methodologies. He has also held a number of key management positions for firms such as Hyster Company and Terex Corporation, where he was responsible for corporate materials management and operations, with a heavy emphasis on the development and implementation of business improvement strategies, including Class A ERP, lean manufacturing and team building.

TOPIC: Ten Important Lessons You Won’t Learn in School

If you are lucky enough to find a job these days, there are two things that most of us come to realize after the first day or two on the new job.  They are:

1.       We have four years (at least) less experience than the other people our age that didn’t go to college.

2.       We know almost nothing about what is really important in business today or how anything ever gets shipped.

In order to get past that first dose of reality, you must understand the ten important lessons that, frankly, you didn’t or won’t get in school.

On Student Night at the Wisconsin Shoreline Chapter of APICS, you will learn about the ten critical lessons that my 30+ years of helping companies improve their performance have taught me.  You will see some real life examples of how these ten lessons have been used in a variety of businesses to dramatically affect the performance of sales, financial and operating results.

No matter if you are still a student or a seasoned practitioner; this presentation will help you understand how to use the ten lessons to better leverage your improvement efforts.

APICS Announces New Membership Dues

The APICS Board of Directors approved a new membership dues structure beginning April 1, 2008. The focus for APICS has always been on providing the value that members seek to improve their on-the-job performance, advance in their careers, and thrive as operations management professionals. The new dues structure will provide greater support and resources to APICS partners (chapters, districts, and IAs) who deliver programs locally.

Member association dues will increase from $110 to $150 for professional members. Professional members belonging to chapters will pay a flat fee of $50 for the chapter portion, for a total dues amount of $200 for professional members. (If a chapter charges more, APICS will collect the additional amount on behalf of the chapter.)

The dues will change from $110 to $200 for domestic members-at-large; from $130 to $200 for international members-at-large. The dues amount for retired members will change from $55 to $75, plus chapter dues if applicable. There are no changes to academic, student, and international associate fees.

The enterprise membership will change to a tiered structure. Enterprise membership

APICS will offer enterprise members the opportunity to add additional members based on a sliding scale (illustration below).  The current group membership structure will be phased out and current group members will transition to enterprise members as memberships come up for renewal.

The new dues structure support will enhance the capabilities of APICS partners with support from corporate office funded field staff, funding to deliver enhanced member benefits and services locally, and new and enhanced tools and resources for chapter leaders.

APICS will continue to enhance association programs and services. Already, members can take advantage of new and enhanced benefits in 2008. Many of these benefits are accessible online at http://www.apics.org/membership

Members are being encouraged to renew before March 31 at the current dues rate for up to five years. By taking advantage of this special offer, members will be assured valuable membership benefits at the current dues amount in an association that now offers more perks than ever before. Members can read about the new and enhanced benefits in the 2008 member benefits flyer.

Student Case Competition:

The Student Case Competition is designed to encourage Student Chapter involvement in District and Professional Chapter activities, allow students to compare their education with that of other students, test their classroom education and its usefulness in solving real-world situations, and to heighten the importance of APICS involvement (as a college student and as a professional) now and in the future.

This year’s competition took place February 15th and 16th in Oak Brook, IL.  LTC had a team of 5 members sponsored by the Shoreline Chapter.  Members of the team were Kristine Pigeon, Brenda Dahlgren, Scott Cochrane, Jamie Serrahn and Crystal Bohman. The team came in 3rd place and received an award of $582, scoring very well against stiff competition of over 22 major institutions consisting of more than 240 students and professionals.  LTC was the only tech school in the competition.

If you would like to hear more about the case competition plan to attend the March PDM.  It is student night and some participants will be giving an overview as to their experiences on having been part of the team?

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE LTC TEAM!
