Shoreline Board of Directors 2008/2009

What a terrific evening we had at Millhome. The food was great, the company terrific and
the speaker, Allan Kauth of Oliver Wight Americas, Inc took us down memory lane
decade by decade. This animated speaker
identified how the decades have handled the issue of Operations Management. It was a fun filled evening. Get your reservations in and mark your
calendar for the October 11th tour of the Windmill facility in
Sheboygan Falls and a great evening at The Bull. We will hear about the Annual Conference in
Kansas City, MO and enjoy another great talk about the lean journey Windmill
has taken.
If you are interested in joining the BOD or just want to
attend to check it out, please join us on October 7th at LTC for
dinner and the Board meeting. We are in
one of the rooms up the hall from the receptionist desk. Just listen for the excited voices of your
Board members. See you soon.

Notes from International
Conference:
By: Linda Tryba and Deb Gunderson
The International Conference, held
in Kansas City MO this year, again gave APICS members a chance to meet and get
to know other members from around the world while learning new ideas and
gaining new skills. There were 3000 in
attendance at this conference. Countries
represented included the United Sates, Canada, Spain, Argentina, France, England,
Uruguay and many more. We were given the
opportunity to discuss many topics with a large variety people from different
backgrounds. This allowed us to bring
home a more expansive knowledge of the world around us.
Both of us were able to mentor students
at this conference. Linda’s scholar,
Whitney Frye, came from Ohio and attends Bowling Green University. Deb’s scholar, Tim Kumornik, came from Canada
and attends Connestoga College in Kitchener, Ontario. Both students took home a wealth of information
and an experience that will enhance their future employment searches. Through their networking all of the students
now have a list of contacts for job opportunities for when they graduate. We
found that we learned as much from them as they learned from us. Whitney and Tim, along with 98 other
scholars, were able to attend the conference due to the E & R Foundation
Scholars Fund. If you would like more
information about the E & R you can log onto the APICS website APICS
- E&R Foundation.
This year’s conference consisted of
“learning paths” where a specific area of interest was explored in depth. The paths contained an overall session,
specific educational sessions, a mini workshop, a case study and finally a wrap
up session. This allowed the learner to
cover a variety of components within their area of interest or to expand out to
others areas if so desired. Also this
year a plant tour was included with each registration. Tuesday morning was tour day with a lot of
buses moving a lot of people in a short amount of time to their designated
locations. Deb was able to tour a
company called the Roasterie, which is the largest air roaster of specialty
coffees in the US and Linda was able to tour Sweet Expressions, a modest sized
shop that specializes in home made candies.
The opening and closing receptions
gave members an opportunity to meet in an informal setting. During the opening reception we were able to
discuss topics of interest in a beautiful outdoor setting with a dinner theme
much like a tailgate party at Lambeau Field.
The football games occurring on that afternoon and televised on a huge
screen gave many members a way to cheer on their team even when far away. The closing reception gave everyone an
opportunity to exchange addresses and say goodbye to new acquaintances.
Next years conference will take
place in Toronto,
Ontario, Canada Oct 4-6, 2009. Registration opens in March. Please consider being a mentor if you plan to
go. It is a very worthwhile endeavor and
you will gain as much from the experience as the scholar.
