To our Readers:

President’s Message

Our October PDM and tour of Manitowoc Cranes were a great hit with the attending members.  We wish to thank Manitowoc Cranes for allowing us to tour the facility.  Steve Brahm gave a very informational account of the progress Manitowoc Cranes has achieved in the production facility.

November’s upcoming PDM will be at City Streets, Sheboygan. Michael Loos will be speaking about “Continuous Improvement and the Importance of Purchasing”.  Be sure to mark your calendars for the 11/18 PDM.

We had four LTC students who were able to attend the International Conference this year.  Included in this newsletter is a recap of their experiences.  It proved to be a very enlightening experience for them.

If your membership dues are up for renewal and you are laid off at the current time, your can receive 6 months free while you are seeking a new position.  Remember if you need to fill a position during this time we have members who are looking for employment opportunities.  Just email a Board member any open positions you are looking to fill.

Daylight saving time ends Nov 1, don’t forget to turn you clocks back 1 hour.

Shoreline Chapter Nov 11 PDM Food Drive Donation to the Salvation Army Manitowoc/Sheboygan.

Please show your generosity and bring either canned or boxed food items with you to the Nov PDM. The total collected will be equally divided between the Manitowoc and Sheboygan County Salvation Army locations. In speaking with a Salvation Army representative, the items most in need are:

Peanut Butter

Soup- NOT TOMATO

Canned vegetables

Canned fruit

Cereal

Canned meats

Boxed Dinners

Crackers- this is an item that the Salvation Army does not normally purchase due to the high cost. This makes snack-type crackers in highly appreciated for the holiday season.

Personal hygiene items; soap, shampoo

Cash donations are also accepted.

Each person donating will be included in a $25 cash drawing to be held the evening of the PDM.

Donate 1 item = 1 ticket

Donate more than 1 item = 2 tickets

The Shoreline Chapter will be recognized for this donation in the local newspapers.  Most importantly though is the spirit of giving and sharing. Donations will go to help not only low-income families, but also families who are in situations of lay-offs and job loss due to companies downsizing.

The Shoreline BOD thanks you, in advance, for your generosity.

The Board of Directors meets on the first Tuesday of every month at Lakeshore Technical College at 6:00 PM.   There will be a special meeting of the board, in May, to review the program year and plan for the next year.   All members are welcome to attend any board meeting.

News from International Conference:

In May of this year, four students in the Supply Chain Management club at Lakeshore Technical College decided to take the opportunity to attend the APICS, The Association for Operations Management, International Conference, held in Toronto, Canada, from October 4th through the 6th. With that decision came the challenge of putting to use some basic principles of logistics, purchasing, and teamwork to coordinate travel and lodging arrangements and fundraising activities to make the opportunity a reality. After months of planning and preparing, the trip became a reality.

John Roehrig, Steve Hutchins, Tom McCabe, and Jesse Hardrath were determined to take their learning experience outside the classroom and have a first-hand look at the profession in which they are studying. Two of the students, Tom and Jesse, were awarded a special Scholar invitation, given to a total of only eighty students throughout the country. This extended their opportunities to include a leadership workshop and special networking session, held the day before the official conference. Congratulations to Tom and Jesse for receiving such an honorable award, and congratulations to all four for their efforts!

The conference offered many opportunities to enhance attendees' understanding of supply chain concepts, principles, and strategies through three days' worth of educational sessions. These sessions extracted knowledge from real-world business cases and scenarios, detailing what did and did not work and the perceived reasons why. Some sessions focused on professional advancement by discussing topics such as conflict resolution, leadership essentials, effective presentations, and job-searching strategies.

Aside from all the business of the education sessions, there were other activities which attendees could participate in. The Head of the Class competition tested students' knowledge of supply chain concepts. Students began by standing and were asked questions that covered many different topics. They answered by holding up a corresponding card. If they answered wrong, they had to sit. The last person standing was the winner. Steve Hutchins finished twelfth out of more than sixty participants. Congratulations to Steve for finishing in the top twenty percent!

Another activity was a Scavenger Hunt, which led participants through the downtown area with clues that familiarized them with the landscape and taught them some brief history. Tom McCabe and his team finished second, winning the rare opportunity to meet with the APICS Board of Directors for dinner. Congratulations Tom!

Also offered were tours to area businesses, one of which was the Provincial Emergency Management- Ontario Centre. This serves as the coordination center for all provincial emergency operations. This massive facility groups city government with all federal and provincial emergency organizations into one center, allowing free-flowing communication among all in the event of a large-scale emergency.

During the World Cafe session, professionals from around the world were situated at tables to discuss a new question every fifteen minutes with a new group of students. This offered an opportunity to learn about alternative approaches other cultures take to solve common problems that face all businesses worldwide.

The conference also offered valuable opportunities to meet people in the profession who could give alternative insights for questions that are difficult to answer. This was facilitated through the assignment of a mentor to each and every student attending the conference. The mentors helped introduce the students to other professionals, thus opening the door to meeting even more professionals and building large networks, which is a critical feature in today's business environment. Many life-long connections were made, and a thank you goes out to the mentors, who volunteered their time to help the students get the most out of the conference.

The conference effectively confirmed and validated all the different topics of study in the Supply Chain Management program offered by LTC: concepts such as Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, Master Scheduling; coordinating with suppliers and customers; networking to build resources of knowledge. We wish to thank our instructors Scott Mailhot, Tony Gischia, and Steve Redmer for offering a great and valuable program, as well as Jim Mani for his previous contributions to the program. A special thank you to Steve Redmer for all the behind-the-scenes work for the trip. Thank you to LTC for providing funding to make the trip possible; to the Shoreline chapter of APICS for its donations and encouragement; lastly to APICS for hosting the conference and offering student memberships, which gave us the goal to pursue. Without all of you, we would be ill prepared to meet the challenges of a global economy.
