The Board of
Directors meets on the first Tuesday of every month at
News from International
Conference:
In
May of this year, four students in the Supply Chain Management club at
John
Roehrig, Steve Hutchins, Tom McCabe, and Jesse Hardrath were determined to take
their learning experience outside the classroom and have a first-hand look
at the profession in which they are studying. Two of the students, Tom and
Jesse, were awarded a special Scholar invitation, given to a total of only
eighty students throughout the country. This extended their opportunities to
include a leadership workshop and special networking session, held the day
before the official conference. Congratulations to Tom and Jesse for receiving
such an honorable award, and congratulations to all four for their efforts!
The
conference offered many opportunities to enhance attendees' understanding
of supply chain concepts, principles, and strategies through three days'
worth of educational sessions. These
sessions extracted knowledge from real-world business cases and
scenarios, detailing what did and did not work and the perceived reasons why.
Some sessions focused on professional advancement by discussing topics
such as conflict resolution, leadership essentials, effective presentations,
and job-searching strategies.
Aside
from all the business of the education sessions, there were other activities
which attendees could participate in. The Head of the Class
competition tested students' knowledge of supply chain concepts. Students began
by standing and were asked questions that covered many different topics. They answered
by holding up a corresponding card. If they answered wrong, they had to sit.
The last person standing was the winner. Steve Hutchins finished twelfth out of
more than sixty participants. Congratulations to Steve for finishing in
the top twenty percent!
Another
activity was a Scavenger Hunt, which led participants through the downtown area
with clues that familiarized them with the landscape and taught them some brief
history. Tom McCabe and his team finished second, winning the
rare opportunity to meet with the APICS Board of Directors for dinner.
Congratulations Tom!
Also
offered were tours to area businesses, one of which was the Provincial
Emergency Management- Ontario Centre. This serves as the coordination center
for all provincial emergency operations. This massive facility groups
city government with all federal and provincial emergency organizations into
one center, allowing free-flowing communication among all in the event of a
large-scale emergency.
During
the World Cafe session, professionals from around the world were situated at
tables to discuss a new question every fifteen minutes with a new group of
students. This offered an opportunity to learn about alternative approaches
other cultures take to solve common problems that face all businesses
worldwide.
The conference also
offered valuable opportunities to meet people in the profession who could give
alternative insights for questions that are difficult to answer. This was
facilitated through the assignment of a mentor to each and every student
attending the conference. The mentors helped introduce the students to other
professionals, thus opening the door to meeting even more professionals and
building large networks, which is a critical feature in today's business
environment. Many life-long connections were made, and a thank you goes out to
the mentors, who volunteered their time to help the students get the most out
of the conference.
The
conference effectively confirmed and validated all the different topics of
study in the Supply Chain Management program offered by LTC: concepts such
as Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, Master Scheduling; coordinating with
suppliers and customers; networking to build resources of knowledge. We wish to
thank our instructors Scott Mailhot, Tony Gischia, and Steve Redmer
for offering a great and valuable program, as well as Jim Mani for his
previous contributions to the program. A special thank you to Steve Redmer for
all the behind-the-scenes work for the trip. Thank you to LTC for providing funding
to make the trip possible; to the Shoreline chapter of APICS for its donations
and encouragement; lastly to APICS for hosting the conference and
offering student memberships, which gave us the goal to pursue. Without
all of you, we would be ill prepared to meet the challenges of a global
economy.
Many of our members have work
addresses/e-mail addresses at their work place.
If you should get laid off please remember to update your APICS address
with us so we can keep you updated with APICS news. Or you can have both your
home and work e-mail address with us just in case one would change you would
still get the information at the other one.
